What Conversational AI means
Conversational AI is distinct from older NLU/intent-based chatbots in three ways: it understands free-form language rather than triggering on intent keywords, it generates responses rather than selecting from a template library, and it can handle ambiguity and clarification rather than failing on out-of-pattern queries.
Why it matters in behavioral health
Behavioral health admit-line conversations are inherently messy — callers in crisis, complex insurance situations, unclear clinical needs. Older intent-based chatbots fail; modern conversational AI handles the mess gracefully and warm-transfers when it shouldn't.
Real-world example
A caller starts with 'I think my mom needs help.' A traditional IVR would route to a generic menu. A conversational AI agent says, 'I'm glad you called. Can you tell me a little about what's been going on?' and lets the caller talk before structured intake begins.
